It looks like the Skate series is turning into a yearly franchise.Skate 2 was released in January of this year, and today EA announced that Skate 3 is slated for May of 2010. The hook of this new game seems to be the more integrated multiplayer modes, as the story hinges on forming a skate crew and taking on rival crews. The game features a co-op mode that lets players complete challenges together for the benefit of both. And the company is keen to point out the placing a pre-order rewards players with the exclusive Black Box Distribution skate park.
"The social and community aspects of the Skate franchise are something we've always embraced, but we've never done anything to the scale you're going to see in Skate 3," said senior producer Jason DeLong in the press release. "We're giving gamers a very unique experience by providing them with the tools they need to build their ultimate team or create a team comprised entirely of their online friends." We'll have to see if this multiplayer focus amounts to new sales. Skate 2 did reasonably well in the NPDs, but wasn't a blockbuster. Skate 3 is due in a time of year that's grown increasingly crowded with big-budget games as they avoid this holiday season. If it disappoints at retail, we may not see a Skate 4 come quite so quickly.
