You get to choose what you study in college, compared to school where you're forced to do certain lessons. For example, I took carpentry and my friend took a media course. You pretty much specialize from there on out.

college in the uk is where you decide to pick what kind of job you would like i.e if you want to be a plumber u need to take the plumbing course also you can take a levels at college which will help you get into university, also in college i think u can only earn nvq qualifications where as university you can earn degrees in certain subjects

nvq = National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs) are work based awards in England, Wales and Northern Ireland that are nationally recognized

degree = academic degree - an award conferred by a college or university signifying that the recipient has satisfactorily completed a course of study; "he earned his degree at Princeton summa cum laude"
(now although it says a college aswell i dont actually think you can earn degrees at college as the courses arent as in depth or as intense as university...

Am I right in saying College here is different from what you know as College.

I believe College in the US is like Uni here?

University in england is the same as your college where you get degrees. But in the UK after you finish secondary school or high school (12-16) depending on the area you live in you can choose to go to our college, or a 6th form academy which are the same thing (16+, but mainly 16-18 ) where you gain A Levels, Btec National Dip, or NVQ's, that you need to get certain jobs. For university you need to pass your A levels, BTEC, NVQ's to specialise in a subject such as engineering, or being a doctor, or maths etc.

within the next few years the government will extend high school to 18.

I'm 15 and I leave school when I'm 15, my birthday's in June.
The Year 9's and below (so ages 14-13 and downwards) have to stay on until 18. (Because of the government are changing the whole system. (or so I was told.)
You can smoke at 16, but you cannot purchase until 18 (Yet you can join the Army at 16 (so that just confuses me))

Let me explain, "College" in the UK is High School, usually between Grade 9 and 12. 11th and 12th Grade are called 6th Form. College in America is usually what's called University in the rest of the world.
