(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); This was originally written to be part of a series of short stories about a man cursed with immortality and his impact on humanity's long dark history. But i modified this section to be it's own short story so it would be easier to make sense of it.
The series of short stories will be called "A Life of Deathless Sorrow" and i will continue to add stories to it whenever i get a hit of inspiration.

This story is called "Ascend from Darkness"

As I wait in front of the local bus depot for the next bus to arrive, I look around at the ruined and dark landscape around me, wondering when the next poor undead bastard is going to come and try to eat me. It's been years since I landed here in America after my run-in with Samantha Maxis. For a time, it seemed like her reign of terror was over, but it seems Dr. Richtofen has taken her place in the Aether and is controlling the swarms of the damned now. Somehow, I've been hearing Dr. Maxis's voice coming from my communicator recently, even though I know he's surely not among the living.
The sun no longer shines in these lands, the missiles that were launched from Richtofen's research station on the moon have thrown up so much dust and ash that the atmosphere has taken on the permanent blackness of night. The moans and screams of the dead fill the air and the smoke from the burning land chokes the once beautiful world, now reduced to a smoldering ball of blackened earth ravaged by death, sorrow, and insanity.
There's definitely a way to stop Richtofen and restore the world to its former glory. As Dr. Maxis' voice keeps repeating in my head, "You must ascend from darkness. Find the power to unite. Follow the light in the sky. Embrace the trinity and true power will be yours. Return through Aether." I believe I understand what he meant by those words, and I intend to pull Richtofen from the Aether at any cost.
The sound of the bus horn echoes as two headlights become visible in the distance, illuminating the smoky haze with an almost eerie effect. As it approaches, the android driver begins chattering on in Spanish, obviously it is damaged somehow. Anyways, I board the bus and close the doors behind me and sit down on the floor, as the seats are gone. The android honks the bus horn two more times and begins accelerating toward the darkness once more.
As the bus drives down the road, a few zombies begin chasing it, a couple manage to grab on and try to crawl in the windows, but I kick them off with ease. An eerie screaming noise echoes around out in the darkness somewhere close to the bus and I shudder at the thought of what kind of creature could have made that sound and count myself lucky I'm not walking. As the bus began to slow down, I realized i recognized the location it was stopping at. It was the very same American research station I had worked at when humanity began to fight back against Samantha Maxis' reign of terror. This is where I did a lot of research on Group 935's real goals, and the mysterious Group 601.
I stepped out of the bus and approached the outhouse just off the side of the building. Since the front doors were obviously blocked by debris, I would have to take the direct entrance underground. I opened the door and jumped down inside. Upon looking around, the lights were still working, somewhat, they flickered eerily and the sounds of groaning metal came from beneath my feet as i walked. The main chamber where the reactor is was dark, but i could see that the power switch was partially detached from the wall. Fortunately, it didn't seem too badly damaged and I managed to force it back into place.
The moment the switch re-mounted to the wall, the alarm began buzzing, and the reactor began to charge up again. I stared blankly at the reactor as bolts of lightning began firing off from the top and an odd man with a body that looked to be made entirely of lightning emerged from the chassis of the reactor. It roared with a creepy electronic voice and vanished, the lights coming back on and the door unlocking as well.
As I walked through the building, hot lava began to pour through some of the passageways and spill into a large crater in the center of the building. I decided it would be best to leave as soon as possible, and jumped down from the second floor to the outside.
I looked around for a moment, while the thunder echoed in the distance, expecting to see the shambling bodies of the dead, but i saw nothing. The bus horn blared, and for a moment I thought it literally scared the shit out of me, and I boarded the bus again and it began to drive on through the fog once more. Through the front windows on the bus, I could vaguely see the ruins of a town ahead with a large group of the dead wandering aimlessly through the main street.
"Well, Fuck." i thought aloud, loading a fresh magazine into my modified HAMR Light Machine Gun.
