He didn't know she was fake from the start he meets her online and began to talk to her. After getting to know her he begins to get in a serious relationship with this G.I.R.L and when he realized it was not a girl he lied about it so he would not be ridiculed in public. So yes I so think it was wrong of him to lie about the girls death but who wouldn't. You have been talking to a 40 year old man that you think is a girl. I understand why he did it.

No, I can't believe that one bit. He met her in 2009 and by 2011 Te'o's dad said she "would travel to Hawaii every once in a while." Even if that doesn't do anything for you, Te'o and the guy who created the fake profile were friends! Te'o is a smart and handsome guy, he can get almost any girl that he wants. No way I'm gonna believe he fell for this. He knew she was fake by 2011 and they became a "couple" in 2012.
