(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); My brother told me he got a guy off craigslist to send all the information about his computer (serial #, product ID #, etc.) So the question is can he social engineer a computer legally? He knows how to do it and his friends have done so in the past. I wanna know since the guy was a sucker enough to give that information out, can my brother legally do what he wants to do?

I really want to say no... I mean just because an elderly person gives their information out on the internet doesn't make identity theft legal!

He showed me the email lol the guy is like in his early twenties (I would be all over him if he tried to steal from a senior.)

In all honesty I think it should be, you're stealing from someone. Theft.

I wouldn't even try it, to much to risk.

Honestly I'm not even sure what you mean you gave kind of a vague description but from what I gathered you are talking about Social Engineering a person off of Craigslist not the company correct? If so don't Social Engineer everyday people. I SE companies all the time I mean they make billions of dollars I am nothing to them but SE'ing maybe a $500-$1000 computer off of an everyday person is just wrong. Just like you shouldn't SE really small companies.

Obviously it's not legal. You've never made a purchase for that computer, thus cannot get service/repair/a replacement for it.

That is true but that is also SE. You never bought the computer so if you get a computer for free without winning it in a contest or something, yes, it is illegal. No if's, ands, or buts about it.
