Which turned out to be a total scam!

I am currently out of work and around about a month ago I found a rather.... well.. "too good to be true" job listing on Gumtree. It was a warehouse job, advertised as being just a 15 min journey away from where I live and it was £300 a week, paid weekly and to start working asap. Now, if this was actually to be the case, I would have landed myself a pretty sweet job as finding a half decent wage these days is getting harder. I sent an email straight away and within a few days I had a response, from a guy named "Rudy Kentucky, Warehouse Manager". Bearing in mind that all I had said in this email was that I was interested in the job and if it was still available, he wrote saying that he had looked through my information and that he would like me to work for him. I thought it was a little strange but obviously I'm going to accept a job, money doesn't fall out of my parent's pocket into mine like some people.
I was getting all happy and stuff, then like 10 mins later it all changed.
I knew from the moment I read the next email that something smelled fishy, when he asked me not to email him through gumtree but direct to his address. Then I got an email from Gumtree a few mins later... saying to be careful dealing with this user as they have been reported for fraud!!!
I was pretty mad, because I've heard about scams on listing sites like Gumtree and craigs list before. But then I was like ..... hmmmmm... I wondered what kinda scam it could be, so I carried on the email coversation with him. It started getting obvious when he told me that firstly I would be getting paid by cheque, which is very uncommon in england, and secondly that I would actually receive my first one.. before I even start work. He wouldn't even tell me exactly where this job was. All I had to do was give him my name, address and telephone number, and get this, his company's solicitor will send all the information out with the cheque :ha!: wow. I understand that it's risky giving out your address and whatever but I am a risk taker so I went along with it. But then I didn't hear from him for a little while until I got an email saying, "payment sent out, when you get it, email me for instructions on what to do with the money". And in 2 days time I got a letter, containing 2000 euros in travellers cheques wrapped in a folded piece of A4 paper.
My actual 1st instinct was like I'm keeping this for myself fuck it, I knew what was going here before he even said. I have over paid you, cash the money and send some back to me. I was thinking to rip him off, but then I realised they were actually fake and not very good ones :dumb:
A quick google search and all was revealed, african gangs sending fake cheques out worldwide and guess what? I get a call from an african man that same day lool Rudy Kentucky from africa? GTFO
He's like, you get my mail? and I'm like yeah, he starts to tell me to put it in my bank and I just said to him straight.. I'm not stupid, you can have these back mate, they're fake and that's a prison sentence.... and the phone went dead. Haven't heard a thing since.
So I'm double pissed at this, didn't have a job and can't do shit with fake travellers cheques because I am not getting myself sent to prison for up to seven years.
I know a fair few dodgy people, but they're so fake that nobody wants them and I honestly can't bring myself going to the police, so I might just chuck them in the bin. Maybe I should keep them as a momento of what happened.
I would just be careful if this scam comes your way, it seems tempting getting money for pretty much nothing but it's not the sort of thing you want to get involved in. You probably wouldn't make it out of the bank if you tried cashing them in.
