ATI cards have been fueling consoles for quite a long time now, having most recently been included in both the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. And apparently Microsoft is happy, because it appears that ATI will be providing the GPU for the next generation as well. Fudzilla is reporting that Microsoft is happy with the Xenos GPU and want to continue using it, particularly because it will enable them to maintain compatibility with older games. Based on the delivery timeline, the site speculates that it will be a 28 nm part. Word is that the next generation was supposed to start next year. However, due to the recession, both Microsoft and Sony has reportedly pushed their plans back to 2012. That would make the Xbox 360 seven years old when its successor arrived, and the PS3 six years old.
Microsoft has kept quiet about its future plans, and Sony is still sticking to its ten year plans for the PS3. But if the new consoles are really due to arrive in 2012, then we'll likely be hearing more rumors like this starting next year.
