(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); The Freedom Writers.........Banning of the book in schools

On March 11, 2008, an English teacher at Perry Meridian High School in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA, Connie Heerman, was suspended for a year and a half without pay for using the Freedom Writers Diary in her classroom against the wishes of the school board. Administrators objected to racial slurs and sexual content in portions of the book. Heerman had received permission the previous year to attend a workshop based on the books and obtained permission slips from the parents involved. The school board contends that Heermen did not properly follow the rules to receive permission to use the book. Erin Gruwell commented on the controversy, saying, "The best way to get a teenager to read a book is to ban it. When someone who is a daunting authority figure says, 'Give us your book', I think these students, 'There must be something powerful in these words'. "

Books shouldn't be banned. That being said, since it was on school property it's disputable. It goes up for the board to decide which books would not be allowed for whatever content. Seeing as I don't know the material, I would naturally be inclined to say it should be allowed, but that doesn't mean it was.

Honestly.... "..Heermen did not properly follow the rules to receive permission to use the book..." Then she's in the wrong, no matter if the book is a good read, or even if it has the meaning of life in it.

Then again.... I could see how that book could be Education / A good read in general.

All in all still bad on her part, she's in the wrong.

I don't remember any sexual content in the book :P But I don't see why it should be banned, let alone why a teacher would need permission to use it. My English teacher used the book and let us watch the movie, he was motivated and moved by the novel and believed that it could help the students because they could connect to it. We were all in an alternative school.

I read books with racial slurs in the 5th Grade for school. This is preposterous, the children do not belong to the state. If the parents did not object and allowed their children to read this book then I see nothing wrong here. Pretty typical of the school system to not allow children to read anything else other than only what they want them to read.
