As some of you may or may not know, an area in West Virginia has had a ban on drinking, cooking, bathing with the tap water. The ban was announced last Wednesday after discovering that about 7,500 gallons of 4-methylcyclohexane methanol, known as MCHM, had leaked out of a storage tank a mile upriver of the West Virginia American Water plant. The chemical is used to clean coal and is very toxic if consumed.

Over the weekend officials did what they could to dilute the water supply from the river, adding carious chemicals and solvents. They announced this morning that they may be nearing the end of the water ban. The numbers of MCHM are low enough now to be consumed by humans, but the ban will likely last a few more days to be sure nobody is in danger.

I believe the bottled water is being donated, or payed for by the companies. You do realize you pay for the water coming from your faucet though right? Water isn't free.

This is false, it's not going to be drinkable any time soon. They're just saying it to shut the public up. The remnants of the chemical will take ages to fully dissipate. I'm still a tad bit curious as to how they're going to be cleaning all of the chemical out of the pipes that supply them to people's homes. Home owner's will have to flush their water tanks, and still, after sitting in the tank, the chemical will still be there after flushing.

Well.. They've given people in multiple areas permission to drink the water. I don't think they would do that if they felt it wasn't safe. The last thing they want is people dying and filing lawsuits.
