(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Just to throw is out there I'm not that well knowledge with cars or the inners of it so I'm asking if any car knowing person in the forums can you help me out here.

I recently about 2 weeks ago had my old man car taken to Toyota to get an oil change and a check up since they sent me a coupon and it was in due time. The mechanic who worked on the car told me that the Rear brake pads, hardware and the rotors needed to be changed and resurface or else they can damage the engine . They also told me that the front is at a (5mm) and I should do it as well as a pre-caution and the total would be $235 each ( Not counting service fees)

I Usually go to Pep-boys to do some of my car works such as tire change etc plus I have a Card with them for easy monthly payment but the thing is after talking to them they gave me an estimate of $340 with labor cost for one side ( front or back) with a $30 rebate and I also have a $15 discount coupon with in total would cost me $320 at least with tax and this is what is included in the package.

ProStop Ceramic Package
As Low As $229.99 per front or rear brake service ($199.99 after mail-in rebate)

ProStop Premium Ceramic Pad formulas are engineered to match your vehicle’s specific braking requirements while delivering less noise and dust than non-ceramic options

100% slotted and chamfered to reduce noise and harshness
Gentler on your vehicle’s rotors resulting in a longer brake system life
24-Month/24,000 mile labor warranty

So I'm not sure in what to do here as I'm not generally good with this kind of stuff Even when goggling. So any info or advice would be greatly appreciated! Smile

In Flames Much?
ProStop Ceramic Package, pretty sure pads are not going to matter that much and won't see the point in paying that much more.

You believed this bull shit? Brake pads damaging the engine? Take it to an independent shop for a second opinion.

Lol no I don't actually believe what Toyota service mechanics say most of the time as I know they mostly want me to over pay for some things. Thanks for the advice anyhow I'll see if I can find one around my area so the drive isn't that long.

No break pads down't damage a engine and that's why you don't usually get a car fixed by chain places or dealerships unless its a very unique vehicle

5mm does not warrant replacement. When they get to about 2-3mm you should think about getting them done. New pads are usually about 8-10mm. As for the rears, I could not comment as you did not supply any measurements of pad thickness. Unless the vehicle has had brake work already done to it prior to this, needing to do the rears before the fronts is abnormal. The front's do 70% of the braking.

Techs will usually try and sell rotor resurfacing over new rotors as they make more time on it. Depending on the vehicle it could be about the same price to get new rotors. But you only need new rotors in a case of when the rotors are beyond their minimum machining spec, have been warped or excessive hot spots. Sometimes you can get away with putting new pads in, but at the minimum have them machined to remove imperfections that could effect the wear of the pads.

So I will say for sure, that unless you have a pulsating pedal when braking, you DO NOT need the fronts done. As for the rears, I do not have enough information to make an educated assessment.

Thanks everyone for the tip/help. I had the car taken to an independent shop and had a check up/estimate of the cost and talked too my local Pepboys about it and actually got a lower quota with an extra $40 discount with lifetime warranty on the parts plus ( 18 month warranty labor) . I've been going to that Pepboys for quite a while and know they actually do a good job on time with customer satisfaction so no worries there. Again Thank you all for helping with the advice!

I'm a mechanic, brake pads do not damage your engine, neither does the hard ware, if it was me I would go back to the service manage in Toyota and make a complaint for that bullchit!

5mm isn't even half of the brake pads worn! Brake pads are 7MM/8MM thickness when new depending in the pad, 5MM isn't even an advisory, 2MM is when you should be advised to change.

And I do not know why but the US is super dear for vehicle work, over here in the UK/NI a set of break pads front in rear including discs is probably around £40 to £80
