No, I believe they are slightly 'creeped out' that you think that your girlfriend is an anime character, this could be due to the fact that the character does not physically exist and that your are having a relationship with a character made on a machine.

God doesn't physically exist either and was created by people too and millions of people love and worship him, that's pretty much the same loving an anime character, likewise people that love celebrities and dream about being in a relationship with them, it'll never happen so to you me and everyone else, they might just as well not be real. The only difference is that I know my waifu isn't real but choose to love her anyway.
