Gaming industry had quite a big shift over the past couple of years with recording gameplay and live streaming gameplay becoming more commonplace. Youtube for example gaming takes up 1/3 of viewing and content, Twitch is a site based on purely live streaming video game related content.
Whole companies have appeared just providing hardware so people can record gameplay.
Certain companies have been resistance this change bring out copyright laws in force to protect content.
Asian studios have quite slow to change their habits with some blocking any efforts at making content from their work.
Nintendo and Sega have a very big lack of games being played with nobody but reviewers showing off content.
Given how Nintendo or Sega would slap down copyright notices most channels no longer cover any Nintendo or Sega games in protest.

Nintendo has however changed it tune by launching Partnership Program with Youtubers which aims to take between 30% to 40% cut of your advertising revenues. Google however takes 50% of advertising revenues before your MCN takes some more off meaning your share of the pie gets smaller with the program. $100 worth of advertising revenues can quickly turn to 20-30$. Extra fees cut into your advertising revenue even more and given the time it can take to create videos quickly turns into a loss leader.

Developers have noticed that YT and even twitch can increase your game sales without having to release a demo. With many companies now offering free copies of games to YTers or streamers much like normal review copies. Special events are hosted in which a collection of gamers come together to play one game before release just to show off the title. Given how the people who are being targeted are often hard to reach by old media you can see why. Most gamers are aged around 32 often are watching less TV and more Youtube to live streams compared to any other age group. Lost generation which traditional advertising can't touch or even impact.
Little wonder why Twitch was taken over by Amazon given how it a goldmine for 100 million monthly users who watch more live streams compared to TV.

Little to no cost for sending out a free copy with loads of free exposure and publicity.
Independent studios have reported sales increasing every time a video comes out or is covered which most gaming press don't look at. Most viewers are coming for the person playing the game and may not even look for said game until they see it being played.

Nintendo clearly does not understand what driving this and does not understand what is going on.
Yes they have every right to do this but the company is choking off a whole host of growth.
Partnership program should have been a paid promotion if they are clearly worried about the content being posted.
Some of the biggest channels in gaming have called this whole idea a bad deal.
Any channel with Nintendo games only content is likely to be looking at covering other games.

Oh Nintendo :(
We just want to pay games and make money from this hobby why do you do this? :(
