Most people with Jailbroken PS3's download them via PC. I am not sure about the difference I have asked the same question.

because its probably not a good idea to be updating directly from the ps3 servers with a CFW ps3.

loool that doesn't matter at all, people posts the .pkgs for people that want to get the update early so they can update offsets, also they can get the .elf from those pkgs and open it in ida so they update there offsets.

the .pkg's posted on here are almost always posted after the official update is released.

But updates are in different regions, so if I live in Japan I'd have my official update like a day before you would because they get there's first. Each region gets there update at a different time.

true. didnt think of that. but isnt it also safer to update via .pkg? i always thought that was the main reason they were posted lol
