When there isn't a official update from sony, you need to root your device and install a Costum Rom.

so does that mean i dont have to unlock the boot loader to do it? because i really dont
want to try unlock the boot loader as i may brick it.

Im sure unlocking the bootloader does allow custom roms to be installed. My one is locked so i installed an older stock rom so i could root it, i know you want to run the latest android but for me, i suggest staying on icecream, i was on 4.3 now on 4.2.2 so i could root and now my battery life is a lot longer than 4.3.

4.2.2 and 4.3 are both jelly bean, the 4.2.2 had the root exploit. it wasn't really that hard to install and root.

yea you got it. you dont need to unlock bootloader just stay on the stock rom, do not ever install custom roms they contain bugs and other software to steal your mobile number.
