My ISP is TalkTalk, it takes about 40 minutes to download a 400mb file, and 20 to upload a 1 minute clip to youtube.
I have been with TalkTalk ever since I moved house.
We have phoned TalkTalk up many times to ask if they could, run some diagnostics, but they don't care, and claim it's regarding my location.
Every 20 minutes (optimism) my ISP cut off my internet connection, so I have a network, on local only.
I have asked to get a new router. That's what my Dad says to do.
Yet, he still hasn't bought one, so if anyone could tell me any tips/tricks to sort out my internet connection, that'll be great!

Regards

1) Might be better to switch to a different ISP
2) Might just be your plan, there are plans that offer 3, 5, 10, 15, 20, 30, 50 with other services, possibly yours too.
3) Their servers might be getting full at different times knocking you off
4) Your router may be old, make sure it supports Wireless-G
5) Your location can have an affect on speed
6) Are they still using copper wire? Copper wire is slower than today's fiber connections.

Other than that, there isn't much for you to do.

Hey mate, i used to be with talktalk a few years back and they are honestly hopeless. The speeds they actually give you are very slow and the connection is very temperamental. If i were in your shoes i would cancel your current contract if possible then sign up with either virgin media or BT infinity. Try to persuade your dad to buy fibre optic broadband, you can get speeds of up to 40/50mb if fibre optic is available in your area. The prices are not too bad either, can get for £20/30 a month. Also if you are downloading quite a lot, make sure your monthly allowance is 'unlimited', if it is say 10gb then downloading 20 400mb films a month plus general usage on the internet will surpass this allowance and your speeds will be capped at a very slow rate.

Hope this helps, if you have any other queries then do not hesitate to quote me here.

Try and blackmail them. Speak to them on the phone, and if they say "nope, there is nothing we can do", say to them "ok then, I'll just switch provider to {insert one which is better}. I will no longer be taking my custom here anymore". They will most likely get their supervisor on the line and sort it out. If they say something like "Ok, we will cut off your internet connection as soon as possible", just simply go with a different ISP.

My father is refusing to switch contract because we are tied in until August 2013, the only way to cancel the contract i'm in is to pay £250 end of year.

My exchange point for my internet is currently 2 miles away...

I see exactly what you mean, but they ran some diagnostics which boosted my internet speeds up to 20mbps temporarily, to be precise, for a day.

BT have a high line rental in order to buy their connection in the first place.

My internet is also very slow... it's my location I'm pretty sure though.

I've tried many of things, none helped.
