I'm not entirely sure, but maybe something like grunge brushes or something?

all he used were grunge and splatter brushes you can find on deviantart/brusheezy. He smudges some of them and sharpened them on certain settings unbelievably. Easy to do, but personally that doesn't look too good(IMO). But good luck with that.
