I'm inclined to disagree with you on this. Having an established bg does help when creating depth, but it's not necessary. I see some nice depth in v3 as the body is blurred as you move closer to the edges. One thing against it though is that when I look at it the focal for me is the bit on the next rather than the head. The head is a very soft shape in it and the neck is very shard and defined. I think you need to reverse that and make the next a bit more out of focus and bring the head into focus more.
