To improve you need to have a light source. It's simple. Take a big soft white brush and brush on the to. that will be where your lighting will be coming from. Then new layer, image>apply image. Take the burn tool and make the shadowing correct. then the dodge tool to make the bright parts brighter.

when i do that it just looks like i have a white brush smeared there
