I'm new to rooting phones and stuff, but I know some about jailbreaking iPods and iPhones. If I root it, can I tether the internet and use it like a hotspot for other devices like an iPod?

Ok. I will try it when I buy the phone this week. Will post results. And after I root it is there a place to get the tethering app? Like an equivalent of Cydia for the iPod and iPhone?
