This is a very very loose FAQ. Those of you with a Droid X, these instructions will not work. It will only bootloop your phone. Not all Android phones follow this procedure. Please use caution when using this guide.

The word ROM means Read Only Memory, but has migrated in the modding community to mean an actual custom OS image that you install into the ROM area of your phone.

You will most likely have to wipe when upgrading to a custom ROM (of course, we’ll do a full backup first) but once you’ve installed it, any regular updates are usually applied right over the current version and don’t require any wipes.
Remember, all your Google contacts sit in the cloud and will be sync’ed right back as soon as you boot the new ROM and log into Google.

First you need to root your phone.
Just Google " root <Your Phone model>"

An alternative is to download this .apk on your phone and install it.

Now you need to get a ROM.
ROM's come as a .zip file, *don't* extract it.

Download a ROM, you need to find one.

Cyanogen is a very good ROM (and for many different models of phone)
Go to You must login or register to view this content.
and find your phone. Click it, then click Stable and download the 7.0.0 version (seems more stable)

Copy the .zip file you just downloaded to the root of you SD Card.
[multipage=Installing the ROM ]

Go back into ROM manager
and click the second option from the top " Reboot into Recovery"
Press OK and wait.
When in the Recovery menu, use the volume controls to navigate, home button to select and the back button to... go back.

scroll down to the Back up option, wait for that to complete (for file safety)

Go Back to the main menu and click on " Install zip from sdcard"

Scroll to "choose zip from sdcard" and press home agian.

Scroll down until you see the .zip you put there earlier.

    Click it and press yes.

Wait for it to complete. You must login or register to view this content.

Go Back to the original/main option page and click on "reboot system now" (at the top)

Done, You should be on a custom ROM! :420:

Have you got the correct recovery menu flashed?
Got the correct ROM ready?
At what point does it give an error?
