I have recently bought an iPhone off eBay which was advertised as being in recovery mode. However after many attempts to restore it and researching it seems like the iPad baseband was added to a custom firmware which the previous owners used to attempt an unlockable jailbreak. It also seems that this iPhone is now useless as trying to restore it to a normal apple fimrware will cause an error (1) which Apple say is an 'error which we do not know about, you will have to replace the handset'.

So what I am asking, is there any way I could 'convince' Apple's Genius to have a look at my phone, mess around with it, try and restore to see the message I get and possibly exchange the iPhone for a new one or refurbished one?
