I don't know, because I would need to know your carrier. I'm on Verizon and typically they won't let you pay in advance depending on the type of plan I think you have. However sometimes there are exceptions, where depending on the circumstances, the carrier will give you the upgrade early (normally only a few months earlier.) This can be anywhere from being a long time customer, paying the bills on time, or upgrading to a smart phone. Your best bet is if you're getting your plan from your family and they're all in the same "package," to see if one of them has an upgrade soon and use that and give them yours. Worked for me last year when I wanted my Galaxy Nexus. If you're on a GSM based network, I'd really suggest outright buying (when in stock) the Nexus 4, it's so cheap and just a pleasure to use.

Moved to mobile phone discussion.

Most carriers usually have an early upgrade fee. Meaning you will resign another contract with them for the term and they will give you the phone plus an extra fee.

Eg. S3 has 2 months left. I go to Rogers and they say, we'll give you the S4, but you have to sign a new contract for 3 years and the fee for upgrading is 50$ since you are cancelling the rest of the contract you are on now.

Fee of monthly contract x remaining months with most networks.

Example
£35 x 8 months = £ 280 ( trade In your handset to make up this fee )

But
I usually upgrade or pay off to the cancelation date

Why?

Example
18 month contract

If you upgrade on 16 month which case with the 2 months remaining add on to the next upgrade contact you take meaning its really a 20 month contract.

IF ANYONE READING THIS AND ARE ON ORANGE UK AND UNDER +24 RING THEM UP TO GET THE STUDENT TARIFF FOR THE SAME PRICE YOU ARE PAYING 2000 mins + UNLIMITED TXTS + 2GB DATA

Happy have a great day
