And I've tried putting multiple different patches in the folder but they don't load. And I made sure that the patches are for the BLES version. Is it because it's a backup and not the disc?

That doesn't matter whether it's backup or disc. You only replace files in /game and not /GAMES unless needed. Which is why you are not finding that file and it will not work. So first update the game and replace the files under /game. If you do not update the folder will not appear.
