Getting Started

Making Pottery

First, mine some Clay from the west Varrock mine, and buy a jug from any local General Store. Fill it with water from a sink or fountain, and use it with the clay to create some Soft Clay. Head to the Barbarian Village, and use the soft clay with a Pottery Wheel inside one of the houses. Now use the pottery with the Pottery Oven to bake it into a useable item.

Leather

Getting Started

Start by killing some Cows near Lumbridge, gathering their cow hides. You'll also need some money, including 10gp to cross the toll gate, if you haven't done the Prince Ali Rescue quest. Depending on your level (and what you want to make) Soft Leather costs 1gp, and Hard Leather costs 3gp each. You'll also need a Needle (1gp) and some Thread (1gp), which lasts 4 leather items.

After you have your cow hides, visit a Crafting Shop and buy a needle and thread. There is a shop in the eastern side of Al Kharid, and another in the southwest corner of Rimmington. You'll probably want to use the shop in Al Kharid since it's close to the cow pen, and there's a tanner nearby.

The Tanner can be found in the west part of Al Kharid, so speak to him and choose the type and number of leather you wish him to make from the graphical menu.

Now use your needle with the leather and choose the item you wish to craft.

Advanced

Crafting Jewellery

Getting Started

After getting a bit more advanced at the art of crafting, it's about time to move onto jewellery. You can get a huge profit from crafting jewellery, and many of the things you can make give lots of experience.

Gems

You'll need to smelt bars of either Silver or Gold in a furnace, depending on what you want to make. Silver Bars are used to make Holy & Unholy Symbols, while Gold is used to make Rings, Necklaces and Amulets.

Moulds

After making your metal bars, use the bar with the furnace to smelt it and fill the mould.

Other Tools

A Chisel can be used to cut gems so that they can be placed in your jewelry.

To start making jewellery, use a bar of either silver or gold (depending on what you wish to make) with the furnace. A graphical screen will come up with choices of what you can make. Objects that you can craft will be colored in, while things you can't make will be gray.

Gems

After getting a little better at crafting you will have a chance to put gems in your jewellery, which enhances possible abilities and makes it more valuable, on top of giving more experience. You first need to cut the gem and have it in your inventory when you make jewelry. Then just select the kind of jewelry you want to craft. Gems can be sold to either the gem trader in Al Kharid or Falador.

Crushed Gems

Opals, Jades, and Red Topaz can become a Crushed Gemstone if you fail to cut them. You will still receive a small amount of experience. You can also crush them using a Hammer.

Necklaces

Necklaces generally have no purpose other than to look expensive, except for the Burthorpe Games Room Necklace and Necklace of Binding, explained in the Magic guide. They can also be sold to the Jeweller in Port Sarim.

Bracelets

Bracelets are similar to other jewelry in the way that they can be enchanted using a magic Enchant spell to give them special effects when worn. These can be equipped and are worn in the gloves spot. Please see the Enchantment section in the Magic guide for further information on the different effects of bracelets.

Amulets

One of the most valuable items that you can craft are amulets. They give lots of experience, their value is greater, and they can be enchanted.

[multipage=Mining]
Getting Started

To begin mining, you should first obtain a basic pickaxe which you can obtain for free from Bob at Bob's Axes in Lumbridge. Once you have one, it's time to set out and find a place to mine. There are several mining spots around Runescape, but the cities of Lumbridge and Varrock are usually where you should start off your first Mining adventures.

Mining Ores

Now that you've found a place to mine, you can either jump right in and click on a rock to mine from, or you can prospect the rock. When you prospect a rock you will search for any ores inside and determine what type of ore is in the rock. This could take some time, so it's best to learn what color each different rock will be when it has ore in it. Now you can click on a rock to mine from it, and your character will keep mining until you obtain the ore.

Mining Gems

From time to time you may find an uncut gem while mining. These can be crafted, and are valuable to anyone working on the skill. Gems can be cut with a chisel to make them more valuable when sold to a store, but most people would prefer uncut gems to work on their crafting. There's a greater chance of mining a gem if you are wearing a charged Amulet of Glory, but finding a gem can still be difficult.

Powermining

This is also known as "Drop Mining." Powermining is when you rapidly mine ores and drop them solely for the purpose of gaining quick experience. Generally, players will powermine ores that are easy to mine, such as Iron, Copper, Sandstone and Granite. These ores respawn quickly and are easy to obtain.

Pickaxes

Miners that are more skilled have the ability to use higher quality pickaxes which allow you to obtain ores more quickly when mining. Pickaxes range from Bronze being the lowest quality, and Rune being the highest, but they are rather expensive.

Pickaxes can be bought from Nurmof's Pickaxe Shop, which is found in the Dwarven Mines. There are two entrances to the mine: the first being in a building northeast of the east Falador bank, and the second being to the south of Ice Mountain (located north of Falador). The shop itself is found to the west of the entrance. You must go around the twisting passage, and the shop is north of the General Store

Rocks & Ores

Of course, we can't forget the main part of mining; the ores! Each ore can be found in a specifically colored rock to match the ore, and when a rock is full of the ore it will change color. Instead of prospecting each rock, it's best to remember what each rock looks like, in order to make mining go much quicker.

Gems

While mining rocks, you may happen to mine a Gem. Gems can be used to make various objects such as jewelry or bolt tips, and come in a variety of types. Regular gems, including Sapphires, Emeralds, Rubies and Diamonds can all be mined from regular rocks containing ore; the most common ones being Sapphires. If you're a Member and wearing a charged Amulet of Glory, you'll have a better chance of mining gems.

There are also other kinds of gems, including Opals, Jades and Red Topazes which can only be mined from the Shilo Village rocks. Once you complete the Shilo Village Quest, you will be able to use these rocks to mine all types of gems.

[multipage=Smithing]
Getting Started

There are two main parts to smithing in RuneScape: making the metal bars, and smithing them into useful items. Before you can start smithing your weapons and armor, you should first either mine the ores you need, or buy them from other players. Buying the ores or bars from other players may be faster than mining them, but it can be quite expensive.

Smelting Ores

Now that you've got all of your ores together, you should smelt them into bars so that you can make weapons and armor out of them. Just bring the ores to a Furnace, and choose the 'Smelt' option. You'll be able to choose which kind of bar to make, as well as the number of bars to smelt. By right-clicking the bar, you can make 1, 5, 10 or 'x' bars. You can also use an ore with the furnace to smelt 1 bar at a time.

Smithing Items

With your metal bars in hand, it's time to make some armor, right? Not quite. You first need a Hammer to work the metal with, and you can buy one from any local General Store. Now you can begin smithing items by finding an Anvil and using a metal bar with it. This will bring up a graphical menu with all of the different weapons, armor, and other items you can make. When the menu comes up, pay attention to the colors of the names and number of bars.

Anvils

There are many anvils that you can smith from throughout RuneScape. The most desirable location for free-players are the ones in Varrock, located south of the western bank. For members, the same location mentioned before still applies. However, some other locations include Yanille and Seer's Village. Using the World Map, you can find other locations for anvils.

[multipage=Woodcutting]
Getting Started

On Tutorial Island, you learn how to cut trees by clicking on a regular tree with a Bronze Axe in your inventory (or equipped). This yields a set of regular logs, which has various uses such as creating a fire or fletching a bow. The tree also disappears for a short while until it "respawns" or grows back.

Once you start cutting trees such as oak and higher, you'll be able to swing more often and obtain more logs before the tree disappears. The higher your woodcutting level and the better your axe, the quicker you will obtain logs.

Hatchets

There are nine different types of woodcutting hatchets, each with its own level requirements to use. The better the hatchet, the faster you will be able to chop down trees.

Trees

Throughout RuneScape there are 21 types of trees to be cut, with the exception of the Kharidian Cactus. Rare trees (those which require 35+ Woodcutting) are marked with a icon on your in-game map to help you locate them.

Canoes

Canoes are yet another way to get from place to place in RuneScape, and they allow you to travel up and down the River Lum. There are currently 4 types of canoes players are able to make; the higher the level, the better. One of the destinations (the one in the wilderness) can lead to 30+ wild, so be careful when choosing!

[multipage=Firemaking]
Getting Started

Of course, firemaking is a straightforward and easy skill to work on, but you will most likely need some practice when you first start out. There are a few essential items that you should also obtain before you begin.

Items you need

Hatchet - Any kind will work, but the better the Axe, the easier it will be to obtain the wood. Bronze, Iron and Steel ones can be bought from Bob's Axes in Lumbridge, Bronze to Rune can be Smithed, while the Dragon Axe is a possible drop from the Dagannoth Kings.

Tinderbox - This is what lights the fire, and can be bought in any General Store.

Logs - The 'food' for the fire. With a hatchet in your inventory or equipped, click on a tree to chop it.

Building a Fire

Now that you have everything together, you can either use the tinderbox with the logs in your backpack, or drop the logs and use the tinderbox with them. Or, you can now choose the option 'Light Fire' if you see some logs on the ground. Your character will keep trying to light the fire until it catches, and then you've got a hot fire!

[multipage=Cooking]
Getting Started

Cooking can be a fun and interesting skill in RuneScape, since you can often cook several different types of food at the same level. There's a variety of things you can do with this skill, but more importantly, it's an essential skill to survival in the game.

There are 2 main kinds of food in the game:

1.Foods that require ingredients to be mixed together such as bread, pizzas and pies tend to take more time to make.

2.Foods such as fish or beef that need to be fished for or taken from a monster drop and then cooked over a stove or a fire.

Cooking Foods

Fish can usually be cooked on either a stove or fire, but most other foods must be cooked on a range. To cook a food, just use the item with a range or fire. From time to time you may burn the food you're trying to cook, which makes it un-eatable. But, as you gain experience you will get better at cooking and burn less food.

[multipage=Prayer]
Getting Started

When you pray to the Gods of RuneScape, they will help you by making you instantly stronger, or un-affected by a foes' attack, depending on the prayer that you use. To use more prayers and to make them last longer, you should bury bones which are dropped by many monsters throughout RuneScape.

You can find a graphical prayer list by clicking on the silver-colored symbol located to the right of the game screen. It will tell you which prayers you are using, the ones that you can use, and any ones that you can't use yet. To activate a prayer just click on the one you wish to use, and to de-activate it just click on it again.

You can use more than one prayer at a time, but your prayer points will drain faster if you do. When your points drain down to 0, you will be unable to use any prayers until you recharge at an altar. Altars can be found in many churches around RuneScape. They can also be built in the Chapels of Player Owned Houses.

Stat-Boosting Altars

Some Altars will provide you with extra Prayer Points if you pray at it while you have full prayer points (ie: 30/30). There are currently two known Altars that posses this property.

Bones

By taking a short walk through the town of Lumbridge, you could most likely find a backpack full of bones, but you may have more luck by killing monsters for them. Many monsters and NPC's that you can fight will drop bones, but others will not drop any. There are also different kinds of bones you can find, depending on the enemy.

[multipage=Fishing]
Getting Started

Fishing can be a life-saving skill to raise. Why? Fishing allows you to fish all sorts of fish ranging from measly Shrimp to powerful Shark! You're able to cook the fish you earn with the Cooking skill and use the cooked fish to recover your Hitpoints. You'll need this food to help heal Hitpoints while fighting, training Agility and to help you while Thieving when you are caught red-handed. Fishing is also a good source of money.
