DOOM

Doom was that game on the computer that gave me nightmares when I was 5. I would watch my dad play the dark levels with all of the mangled monsters and it completely scared me shiztless.

Nonetheless It was probably close to THE first game I had layed eyes on, besides the good ol' SNES I grew up on for my first few years.

Doom has been FAR from the forefront of my gaming interests in the present though. When my family upgraded to windows xP, Doom became obsolete, and the game was tucked into the closet.

Well this past week, close to ten years after playing Doom last, I was reminded of the wonders of the game. I was watching Family Guy and the episode had the usual 100 laughs a minute, but this episode had a cutscene of Stewie rolling on his bigwheel through various tv, movie, and game situations, one of which was Stewie rolling right through some Doom monsters.

It sparked the memories of my childhood; The wonders, the violence, the nightmares. I was intrigued. I began looking for a free download of the game and within minutes I was immersed into the vast world of the Doom computer games and the endless number of user created content.

I downloaded a port for the game, as is required when running it on xP, and loaded up the classic Doom. In seconds I was shooting through hordes of undead humans, aliens, and demons.

Well after beating classic Doom today I decided to check out some of the user created levels. I was overwhelmed by the sheer amount of content, but by the recommendation of a very handy Doom site I found, I downloaded All Hell Breaks Loose, a user created map set.

I loaded it up and the quality blew me away. It was better than the classic Doom. After looking at the amount of content I could stay entertained with Doom for many months to come. Not to mention the fact that the games cheat codes can provide some added laughs in some situations.

So do you remember Doom? If so then when have you last played it, and would you play it again?

If you've never heard of Doom would you be interested in checking out a classic FPS shooter that goes back to basics?

Doom is one great game, with vast amounts of enjoyment and is touted as THE father of all 3 dimensional FPS gaming
