Last year was a pretty rough year for the Playstation Portable. Sure you had games like God of War: Chains of Olympus, Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and Patapon but unless it was a port of a PS3 or Xbox 360 title a lot of PSPs were collecting dust. But the PSP is an awesome piece of hardware and Sony will try its hardest make it succeed in the states, even though Nintendo’s DS is pretty smacking everybody up pretty good right now.
Anyway, being the PSP fanboy that I am, I figured I conjure up a list of 10 PSP games that I’m looking forward to in 2009. Check it out… the PSP lives!
Resistance: Retribution – We’re sure that you’ve already played Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 and you’re still clamoring for more. Resistance: Retribution should be able to hold you over. The game takes between both PS3 games and you play as James Grayson, a British Royal Marine. Your mission is to take back the European continent from Chimera, which is just as difficult as it sounds. Oh yeah, there will also be 8-player online multiplayer that will include Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Containment and Assimilation. Let’s see your DS do that!! (March 17)
Patapon 2 – Patapon came out about a year ago and was loved by fans and critics alike. Its creative art direction and music rhythm gameplay made the game addictive and an instant hit. So of course there’s a sequel! Patapon 2 features new bosses, new units, a new tribe and new rhythms. There will also be a four-player multiplayer mode. (June 30)
Loco Roco 2 – Back in 2006, Sony released Loco Roco, one of the must have games for the Playstation Portable. It was praised for is simplistic but engagingly fun gameplay, and it was really cute! For Loco Roco 2, your little balls of giggling joy will e able to swim underwater, squeeze through crevasses and discover new abilities. (February 10)
Dynasty Warriors: Strikeforce – The Dynasty Warriors franchise is one of the most beloved in the industry. So when the announcement came that PSP would be getting a title all its own, DW fans couldn’t wait. Strikeforce is based on Dynasty Warriors 6 with similar gameplay and the characters will have the ability to fly. It’s a must-have game for the PSP. (March 24)
Phantasy Star Portable – The Japanese have been enjoying Phantasy Star Portable for about six months now and it continues to be a hot seller. The title has an all-new story with additional missions and a four player co-op mode. We’re not sure what the story is about but the Phantasy Star franchise doesn’t disappoint often. (March 24)
Dissidia: Final Fantasy – The announcement that Final Fantasy XIII probably won’t see the light of day until 2010, made a handful of FF fans a bit disgruntled. But don’t fret, Dissidia: Final Fantasy is still on its way. Although it’s a mix of a fighter and role-playing game, it’s was one of Japan’s top rated games last year. You get to play as a variety of characters from past Final Fantasy games and yes, Sephiroth is in there too. (July 12)
Duke Nukem Trilogy – This trilogy for the PSP and Nintendo DS was announced last summer at E3. The title is apparently supposed to include three games, Duke Nukem: Chain Reaction, Duke Nukem: Critical Mass and Duke Nukem: Proving Grounds. All on one disc or three separate discs? We’re not sure. The game is still in development and there’s no official release date, but it appears it will hit stores this year. As far as gameplay, Wikipedia says “players switch between third-person over the shoulder, first person, isometric, and side scrolling views.” (Summer 2009)
Star Ocean: Second Evolution – Square Enix continues to show love to the PSP with its remakes of classic games. Second Evolution is a remake of Star Ocean: Second Story that will feel like a brand new game. Second Evolution will feature new playable characters, new anime cutscenes, and new voice actors speaking new dialogue. (January 20)
Mytran Wars – Mytran Wars is a tactics game that uses Mech warrior-type robots to battle, along with their weapons: rockets, missiles, and other heavy weaponry. You also get to upgrade and customize your mech to perform to your liking. There are more than 30 missions in 4 different campaigns, a bunch of unlockables, and comic style cut scenes. (TBA 2009)
Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep – This game acts as prequel to all the previous Kingdom Hearts games and stars Terra, Ventus and Aqua, characters who made cameos in Kingdom Hearts II and Final Mix. The gameplay will pretty much stay the same as the previous KH titles and the environments will continue in the Disney tradition. (TBA 2009)
