If you have downloaded Firmware 3.40, you'll notice that the subscription for PlayStation Plus is available.
To get it simply do the following: 'Select Auto Download, Time, and Agree to be a Subscriber.'

PlayStation Plus is the first venture Sony is entering for an online system that is based on subscriptions. Though those of us who don't get PlayStation Plus can still engage in online multiplayer and everything, Plus subscribers will gain access to early betas, demos, discounts on games, and free trials of PSN and PSOne classics.

PlayStation Plus may cost $49.99 for a year, but it will definitely be worth its price tag if Sony can keep offering up excellent content like this first month’s smorgasbord of goodies. This month’s offering alone racks up over $88 in value when you add up all of the free or discounted content.
Here’s what is available in PlayStation Plus now:
Of course that’s not all, there’s also a new Automatic Downloading feature added to the XMB which allows you to update your firmware, or install game patches even if you aren’t in front of your PS3.
Being a PlayStation Plus subscriber also gets you a nice little “Plus” golden d-pad icon next to your PSN profile and on your friends list.
Personally, I think that PS+ is a great idea and a smart move on Sony’s part. The fact that they are not removing any capability from basic PSN users is important, basically these users will get what they have always gotten which for free is pretty darn good. I think what Sony has began to understand is that there is a subset of their user base that is more than willing to pay for extra capability and services. With the amount of money they were bringing in through items purchased in PlayStation Home and people paying for their Qore service, PlayStation Plus seems to me like a natural evolution.[/COLOR][/SIZE]

I doubt that...Microsoft already has Gold and Silver, and already gets its users to pay $50, this is just Sony's version of it.
On another note, great thread MBO, this information will really help people who are on the fence about PSN+ and this thread captures what they will get for free when they sign up

hmmm.. good thread but i wouldn't pay the $49.99 (cuz im cheap)
and PSN members remember this...
1. Of those games in the list how many would you ACTUALLY dedicate a good amount of time.
2. Auto Download. you have a good connection do you need to deal out that cash when you can wait... 30 seconds- a good 8 minutes for updates for games and/or firmware.
3. Of the Beta's, Demos, and discounts how much would you use it?
Please take All of this into consideration.
if your a heavy user who goes for PSN games and trophies thats a good buy
but if you're spending for "oh cool look at these features" then please think about this otherwise we'll have threads popping up about "PS+ Sucks" and other spam.
and PSN members remember this...
