Microsoft has confirmed that its latest Xbox 360 firmware isn't comatible with all models and advises those affected to get in touch.

The manufacturer urges anyone having problems with their system to contact them [url=www.xbox.com/support/contact]here[/url] so they can verify if there is a legitimate problem or not.
Microsoft will replace messed up machines with a brand new Xbox 360 S with 250GB hard drive.
The new firmware was intened to prepare the Xbox 360 for use with the new XGD3 disc standard, which adds 1GB of useable data to 360 DVDs.

Any word on if its just older machines or if its a certain machine from certain area of the world or what?

No shit right. If I update and it happens to me, do I need to send in my HDD? I have the 4GB Slim (Old 360 HDD inside though lulz), so I don't think I should have to.
Any hints as to which types of consoles it's affecting? Old, new, both, certain model numbers etc?
