DICE seems determined to try and find a good home for Battlefield 3 on consoles, trying to make the PS3 and 360 versions competitive with the high polish on the PC copy. But to run such an extensive game, the developers at DICE have apparently had to utilize all the PS3′s resources.
In an interview with the >PlayStation Blog, DICE Producer Patrick Liu explains how they’ve managed to bring the game to the PS3: “We’re very confident – we’re pushing the hardware big-time,” he told the site, explaining that because of the new Frostbite 2.0 engine, they can fill the digital battlefield with some amazing graphics. In addition to their confidence are the requisite setbacks, but they’re not letting that get in the way of their goal. “Of course, we have a performance budget that we have to hit. Everything counts into that: the scale costs performance, destruction, animation, special effects…those are all the things we cram in there.” Sounds like a lot to factor in, even without the greater number of online players PC servers are going to support.
Go ahead and read the full interview if you want to hear them (deservedly so) gloat about their game more. DICE seems to be doing the console versions justice though, and I’m always thankful for that.
