So here are the steps:

1. Find an area with dirt (It doesn't have to be in a dark place)
2. Dig one block and place water inside the empty space
3. Plant the mushroom inside of the water
4. The water will disappear and the mushroom will be planted in its place
5. Hit that bitch with bone meal and enjoy your giant shroom

I started playing Minecraft again the other day and my brother told me you couldn't grow giant mushrooms anymore, I guess they just changed it to like this. Thanks!

You don't need to do the water thing and all that just place the mushroom down and hit it with bonemeal I just tried it on 1.3.2. :/
