(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Launching in December, the Battlefield 3 expansion pack “Aftermath” is set to feature never-before seen multiplayer elements that will really 'shake-up' the online experience. The recent unveiling depicts the experience as explosive, bloody and above all, something totally different.

Set in the shattered districts, streets and villages of a post-earthquake Iran, Battlefield 3 Aftermath depicts a continuing struggle for supremacy and survival amongst the devastation. With operational capacity severely compromised, players will fight through the dust and rubble in a vertical and horizontal urban combat setting.

If small, confined maps and massive, open battlefields didn't suit your tastes, Aftermath just might be what you are looking for in Battlefield 3, come December. On top of new locations, weapons, vehicles and a new game mode, Aftermath will feature thematic elements, relating to events from the single player that will affect the gameplay of the multiplayer.

In the post-earthquake setting of Iraq, the maps are roughly the size of the Back to Karkand levels, offering an exciting mix between infantry and vehicle based combat; unlike previous Battlefield 3 expansions, there are no extremes on both ends of the spectrum. Vertical gunfights, flanking paths and jagged terrain are just some of the gameplay elements you will face when traversing the map. The three new vehicles which will be introduced are a mix of modified civilian and military vehicles: the Phoenix, Barsuk and Rhino.

Player skins are modified, showing the brutality of the situation the soldiers are in. Bloodied and bruised survivors of the earthquake fight in the post quake levels.

Random tremors during the match can cause debris from buildings to fall on soldiers, causing immediate death. Hidden passages become accessible after blowing up certain blockages, particularly noted on the map Epicentre.

Supporting not only the vanilla Battlefield 3 game modes such as Rush and Conquest, Aftermath will add a brand new mode titled Scavenger. Following the earthquake, soldiers begin with only a pistol and a small amount of ammo, and are left to search for weapons on the ground. Three objectives are available for capture, just like in Conquest Domination. Your only options for your choice of class is your player skin, sidearm, one specialization and one grenade. Weapons located on the ground are broken up into three tiers, and each only has a small amount of ammo.

  • Tier 1: SMG's and PDW's
  • Tier 2: Shotguns and Sniper Rifles
  • Tier 3: LMG’s and Assault Rifles

Also making its way into Aftermath is the Crossbow. This modified assault rifle packs a punch with two variations, and four different crossbow bolts:

  • Standard Tip (mid-range, mid-damage )
  • Scan Bolt Tip (proximity detector)
  • High-Explosive Bolt Tip (works well against vehicles)
  • Balanced Bolt Tip (long-range engagements)

What's great is it will not be limited to Aftermath; once you own the expansion pack, you will be able to use the Crossbow in any game-mode, on any map! You have the choice of either equipping an 8x scope, or a red dot sight. The Crossbow uses an equipment slot, and doesn't replace your primary or secondary weapon.

Achievements and Assignments will accompany Aftermath, challenging the player to progress on the new vehicles or perform kills with the Crossbow.

The Battlefield 3 expansions, to date have been rich gameplay experiences, and Aftermath will surely be no exception. It launches December 2012, first for Battlefield 3 Premium Members on the PlayStation 3. Stay tuned to NextGenUpdate as more details emerge surrounding Aftermath as we approach the launch date.

What are you most excited for? If the new Scavenger mode doesn't quite sound like your idea of the true Battlefield experience, surely the new maps, vehicles and weapons do! Leave a comment with your thoughts, we would love to hear them.

This looks and sounds so bad ass. Scavenger mode seems like it could be really fun. And the crossbow. :brilliant:

Haha, yes. The Crossbow sounds like a heap of fun. It might be very interesting to use in the Close Quarters DLC maps, as well :p
