Were the cars the same color as the tint of the light?
So green car-> green light?
red car-> red light?
If so than the glass covering the front lights could be tinted by a small "color overflow" from the carbody color.
I had a standard car model Nissan Fairlady Z 300ZX (Z31) '83 with green window glass after painting the body fluor green.
Also the glass over the headlights looked tinted on some painted cars. One of the older nissan fairlady's i think.
Hm, I've tried this with a early model Rx7, (85' fc) where I painted it one of the new "japanese 010 DLC color" it changed the window tint to the color, but since it is a standard, I haven't gotten the chance to see the light's change a different color, it maybe some useful bit of knowledge to look over though, will post pics if anything changes!
