Soft Reboot is were you just shut it down by tapping the power button or by controller and dosnt rest the blu-ray drive .Hard Reboot is were you turn off the the witch on a fat ps3 or pull out the cord on any ps3 does rest the blu-ray drive and is used to do a "Full Shutdown" and is use when you cant turn off the console by the power button like if a game freezes and cant turn it off by the power button i call it a "Full Freeze"

Soft boot only resets the lv2. the hard boot resets lv2 and lv1(turns off ps3 then runs the turn on command)

Soft reboot = Button Hard Reboot = Back of console.
