Check what firmware you're on, just got to system and then second last option. I think it's called about this system.
If you're on 3.55 firmware or lower, you can jailbreak. However, you cannot go online if you only have one ps3 :|

^^ That, you've essentially got to choose whether you want the luxury of playing online or the ability to play most PS3 games for free. Or alternatively you could buy another PS3 and do the lot, but I understand that most people can't afford 2 PS3s.
