Whenever I turn it off though it beeps three times after a while and then turns off. I read somewhere that is because of "hardware failure". Would that be my broken bluray or the system ???
And whenever I go to launch a package app, it just goes to a black screen and I have to turn it off.

My main question is is the blu-ray preventing the PS3 from starting any applications? And are those beeps for the blu-ray?
If so is there any possible way around booting a pkg without a BL drive?

Try the obviouse reboot in recovery menu ... formate it .rebuild database, and restore all default settings...if dont work or make a diffrence then its hardware try installing ofw then back to cfw seems to me hardware or bad corrupt data.

turn off the system and try holding the power button until the ps3 turns on and then off. then hold it down again to turn it on but keep holding it down until you hear 2 beeps the let it go. it will put your ps3 in recovery mode this should erase all the corrupted files on your ps3. and select restore the file system when the selection screen comes up.

ooyh almost forgot..i have spare blue-rays ,250gb harddrives , and slim ps3 fans.......PM me if intrested ill do it real cheap but you have pay for delivery.

Well turned out the beeps do mean "hardware failure" as in its broken drive. I replace it and no more beeps and it can launch apps but I can't get it to suck in discs
