I bought a 1.90 and it would not update so i had to swap it, make sure the blu-ray drive and Logic board works or else you will not be able to update the firmware.

Hours of confusion and being pissed off, also note using a external hard-drive with usb power source is better than a flash-drive. Sometimes it can be your flashdrive failing at 70% update.

Yes get a USB make a folder called PS3 then inside that make one called UPDATE then inside that put this file in it You must login or register to view this content. It is the sony official 3.55 Update. Then put the USB in your playstation. Go to settings, system update, update via storage media, proceed, but be sure there is no game in the disk drive.

And you can go lower. You just boot into f/s mode then use a lv2.diag and the FW you want
