No, wiping out the hard drive wont work!!
You can however downgrade using Progskeet or E3 flasher, unfortunately you will need to buy these.

Not sure if you were trolling but he meant the firmware has nothing to do with the hard drive. I believe the firmware is actually stored in the motherboard of the playstation.
