The freezing is probably a heat issue, buy an external fan for the ps3 to keep it cool.

If all your doing is jailbreaking the overheating ps3 to transfer patches to another ps3 then no the overheating should not effect it, you should try and clean the system or get it professionally cleaned maybe a external fan like JonoEfthy said! You should be golden!

the only way you're gonna update the software is if you sign in on it. It can be plugged in to the internet as long as you don't sign in. If you go to sign in, sure, it's gonna want to update.

Get a can of canned air, and blow out that thing...that'll probably solve 99% of the heating issue.
