Today, you are more likely to get banned than a few months ago. It is not recommended to ever go on PSN with 3.55. You have the option, but you shouldn't.

Backups, with no internet connection is fine. Using backups online is bad, whether or not you carefully use Multiman.

There are measures to prevent banning but none are guaranteed.
