I'm unsure if during the flashing process it has to be able to read from the drive at some point or not. Also, i've seen numerous places online (like ebay etc) that offer downgrading services, are there any reputable places you can recommend, places you've had good experiences with, that kinda thing...

the bluray does need to be there even if it dont work as long as its plugged in it should work, also bluray has nothing to do with flashing the console just needs to be there when you install the cfw

Dont install any firmware if your ps3 has a broken Blu-Ray drive. If you do, your ps3 will go into a update loop (updating then getting an error and restarting)

OK so I have 2 PS3's coming in that are fully functioning apart from the blu ray drives not reading discs (the drives are physically present). As long as I can find a reputable person to do the downgrading I *shouldn't* have an issue?

Yes as long as they are there they can be downgraded, I downgraded mine with a bad bluray aswell, & I have a service here on this site in not check Craigslist or ebay
