CEX is basically where all of us is using which is retail firmware, DEX is developer firmware. On DEX, you can use RTE tools to Real Time Edit on the newer Call Of Duty, however you can not data transfer to your other PS3 and such. On CEX, you can RTE as well but it's limited with options and you can data transfer to your other OFW PS3. It is not possible to RTE on OFW because you will need to have FTP access to modify the files like the eboot and such.

Well think about it, developer firmware lets you have more options like tools to go online and edit games. You can probably make a game on your own and test it out on PS3. It's basically like you have full access to your PS3's software. Retail is just the PS3 firmware we have which Sony releases, and custom firmware is only on 3.55 retail PS3 OFW. You can go to DEX with some tutorials with Linux or alot of stuff to do which I am completely lost right there haha
