but in the ps menu etc i have sound. what could that be?

Try another HDMI port, one hdmi port on my seems to not give ingame sound but give smb sound

i would restore my ps3, or re-install your firmware if that dont work I would try the opposite video port u are using so if ur using hdmi i would use standard component, if u are using component use hdmi.

check the debug setting the same thing happen to my long time ago

just hold down the button that turns on the ps3 wait for the second beep then it should ask if you want hdmi then do what it tells you then the sound should work. the same thing happened to me like a week ago
