first off, what firmware do you want?

Just install the lastest CFW.
At this moment you need to be on 4.60 to get online ( 4.65 is optional)
For instance, I am running Rogero 4.55 spoofed to 4.60 to get online.
There are many CFW currently out there but it is up to you brother to figure out which one is the right one for you.
Just make sure to install CEX CFW versions and not DEX CFW. DEX requires you to convert your CEX to DEX
Also make sure to run PSNpatch before going online. This will basically disable you CFW and make it look like a legit PS3 running OFW.
And last and very important, when installing CFW make sure you don't have a PS3 disc in the drive and the internet is disabled

internet disabled? iv never heard that one. is that to prevent ban?

I normally tell newbies to disable the internet just in case they accidentally "Update via Internet"
