Can this be done with a USB

Yes you will need an e3 flasher and some soldering will need to be done. Is your firmware on 3.55 or below because then you can just installed a desired CFW if not you will need the e3 flasher.

if u want a cfw on ur ps3, ur ps3 must be running 3.55 OFW, or CFW, if ur console is above 3.55, u will need to do a hardware stuff (E3 flasher), it can't be done with a usb, expect if ur ps is 3.55 OFW or lower, period.

So if I buy a PS3 on 4.46m and the PS3 is PHAT I can't downgrade with a usb

fyi, ur ps3 is jailbreakable, but first u need to downgrade it, in order to install CFW on it, u can't downgrade it via a usb! just buy a E3 flasher and downgrade it by urself, or just get someone experienced to downgrade ur console.

no, just look for a ps3 that is already 3.55 OFW, or find a jailbreakable one, and downgrade it with a E3 flasher, HARDWARE STUFF! NOTE: all phat models r jailbreakable, but find one that has a nor chip it is way too easier/cheaper than NAND chips/models
