Recently it has randomly started switching itself off.

It normally happens when I first turn the console on, I'll get onto the XMB and all of a sudden 3 beeps and the system turns off, sometimes it happens just the once, other times it can do it 2-3 times, or I will get a game loaded and it will do it then.

Happened yesterday 2 times after boot up and once as soon as GTA5 loaded, after that it was completely fine, played GTA for a good 3 hours with no problem.

My console never seems to get to hot and the fan is never stupidly loud or anything, it's very clean inside. Any ideas?

Do option 2 first, it's easiest.

It sounds either than there is an issue with the cooling in the system and it's shutting down to prevent ylod and over heating issues - I had this with my old fat PS3, changing thermal paste done the trick. However it could be a semi-brick (in other words your system firmware is corrupt). There are two things you can do here...Turn your PS3 off and then take hard drive out, put it into your computer and format it (fat32) and then reinstall Rebug (Try 4.75.1 - latest release). Or...

1. Enter recovery mode (while ps3 is in standby, hold the power button down until it shuts down again, then release. Hold it down again until you hear 2 consecutive beeps)
2. Connect controller with usb
3. Get a usb stick and create the folder "PS3" (in caps no quotes) on the root of the flash drive and inside of that make a new folder and name it "UPDATE" (in caps no quotes).
4. Download the firmware that you want to be on or already are on and put it in the folder named UPDATE we made in step 3. The PS3 firmware should be named PS3UPDAT.PUP and be around 170 mb. If it is not named that, name it that (in full caps). If it is not that size or close to it (give or take 10 mb) then you have downloaded the wrong file.
5. Plug the usb flash drive into your ps3 while it is still on the recovery menu and the select System Update (the last choice)
6. Press Start and Select at the same time and it will say "Checking... Pease wait."
7. Now go make some cookies or something and wait for about 15 minutes or longer because it takes A LONG TIME! It can take up to an hour for it to "check". Be patient.
8. Check on it every 3-5 minutes. It may say that you need to reformat the ps3 hdd. Do so. After it will be "checking" again. Continue making cookies, watching tv or whatever you were doing while you waited the first time because it will be A LONG TIME again. Be patient.
9. Finally, it will prompt you to go through the updating process. Go through it as normal and let it update. After it is done you should have a working ps3!
