No you NEED an E3 Flasher to downgrade.

E3 Flasher is a must if your console has a firmware that is higher than 3.55.

My console was before 3.55, so how would I downgrade it?

What you mean it was before 3.55? You mean it still is, if so yes you can jailbreak the ps3.

You would need to either have an E3 flasher | Progskeet 1.21 | Teensy ++ Without having either you would not be able to Jailbreak your console...
