Post: PS3 Console LED mod

(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Hey guys! I am kinda curious why nobody does any lights or etches on the PS3...They have a lot of room, even though stuff is packed in. I just got finished with my 40GB system, at least the lights. White on top, color changing (red-green-blue) on intake/exhaust.

I have more plans for it - the top of the power supply is off because I am forming plexiglass to the curve of it and etching the Final Fantasy logo (since America didn't get anything cool for the release of 13...) and am gonna try to cut out the badge (Sony Computer Entertainment, Inc.) on the bottom to make it glow too. So far I think I have 45 LEDs in it, but the power drain isn't bad. Doesn't lag up the system or take anything away from it. They are wired to the 12V in the power supply, so they are pulling from the actual supply instead of the motherboard. Any comments are appreciated!

I gotta say, I love what you've done here. I'm on the first stages of tearing my 80gb model apart and was planning on squeezing a cold cathode tube in there for light (I like the solid glow it gives). I'm planning on putting in a clear viewport too, no etching though, I just want to be able to stare at the guts of this thing.

That's what i wanted to do too...all u gotta do is cut the top under the cover out and you're good to go! Good luck getting the cold cathode to fit...there is like no room in that thing on the front or back...sides can't handle them either...you are gonna have to take the cathode out of the tube to even think about getting it to fit. the inverter would probably fit just fine in the front left of the system
This was definately a fun project and the power supply can handle lots of lights...still haven't had a problem out of this thing...decided to keep it, and it's been running strong! Good luck with your project and definately post pics!

I haven't gotten anything put in yet but I've got some plans going on. To those of you who don't really want to do it because you're afraid you'll ruin the PS3 it's really not that tough as far as pulling the system apart goes. The highest probability of damage that I've seen will come from soldering into the power supply. Just take your time and stay organized and it'll turn out great.
