When i go to system settings is says "system software reset" or something like it and it says if i reset it reset the ps3 to its default software which is or isnt the firmware?

I do not want to test because i dont want to accidentely delete all my stuff

No it will not work. The firmware info is kept on the nand. It has nothing to do with the HDD which your solution will erase.
