I really have no authority to act like I know what I'm talking about but I don't think that would work.
If you want to easily change patches buy some cheap 2.5in SATA hdd's and put a patch on each and just switch the hdd when you want a different patch.

Side note: would it be possible to partition the hdd in the ps3? then have two or more partitions exactly alike aside from different patches?
