basically there is offiicial sony firmware, which everyone has on their PS3 (and is stored in flash1, 2 and 3). It's the Playstation 3's Operating System. A custom firmware is a modified operating system for the PS3 which will let us do whatever we want. The most obvious one is all the debug options available to use on a retail ps3 whilst still being able to access retail PSN.
Because of the fact that the Ps3's private keys have been calculated by a (very simple) program, we can now edit all the files in the PS3's update files (PS3UPDAT.PUP) and also repack them and 'sign' them with these keys. This means that we can 'encode' the files in a way that Ps3 will read, understand and accept them.
